Are You Being Honest With Yourself?
I have been sitting with this concept of honesty, betrayal and self-deception for a few weeks now and am ready to share some of my thoughts under the heading – are you being honest with yourself?
Let’s start with self-deception…
What is Self-Deception?
A number of definitions on self-deception exist, including –
- “the action or practice of allowing oneself to believe that a false or unvalidated feeling, idea, or situation is true.” ~ Google
- “Self-deception involves allowing yourself to believe something about yourself that is not true, because the truth is more unpleasant.” ~ Collins Dictionary
- “the act of hiding the truth from yourself” ~ Cambridge Dictionary
- “the act or fact of deceiving oneself.” ~ Dictionary.com
Now that we have some insight on self-deception, let’s look at honesty.
What is Honesty?
There are many definitions of honesty, including –
- “the quality or fact of being honest; uprightness and fairness” ~ Dictionary.com,
- “fairness and straightforwardness of conduct” ~ Merriam-Webster Dictionary, and
- “the quality of being honest” ~ Vocabulary.com.
And honest means “telling the truth or able to be trusted and not likely to steal, cheat, or lie” ~ Cambridge Dictionary.
Are You Being Honest With Yourself?
So now you have read the two definitions of self-deception, you can reflect – are you being honest with yourself? For me when I started my end-of-year review ritual this year, I made a promise to myself to tell the truth, so I can get clear on who I am going to be this year and what I am going to focus on.
I have looked at all of the areas in my life, know where I am in each area and am now ready to focus on my top priorities for each (not someone else’s). Oh what a gift!
Over to You…
Are you being honest with yourself and what you want to create for yourself and your loved ones?
