Interested in finding out more about grounding and how you could become grounded? If so, keep reading as in this post I am going to share –

  • What is Grounding? and
  • Becoming Grounded.

Let’s get started…

What is Grounding?

There are a few definitions of grounding floating around, however how I refer to it is as follows. Grounding is a coping strategy that often uses the five senses to cope with stress and bring us back in to the present moment. The intention is to “ground” us and bring us back from the “then and there” in to the “here and now”. Grounding is similar to mindfulness, however grounding can also be used as a distraction strategy to get us out of our head and away from upsetting thoughts, feelings, emotions, images and/or memories.

Becoming Grounded…

In order to become grounded we have to realise we are not grounded. Then we can take intentional and conscious steps to bringing ourselves back to the present. We can become grounded through any of the five senses – sight, smell, sound, taste and touch. For example – seeing five objects within a room, smelling or tasting mints, hearing five sounds or touching a stone or soft blanket.

Grounding can be done at any time or place. No one needs to know we are are doing it. It is also a personal strategy – as what works for one person, may not work for the next. Subsequently, individuals need to work out what grounding technique works best for them, which may include some trial and error.
