Is It Time to Start Valuing Yourself?
One thing I have been investigating for a while now is value and remembering we are more than what we do. I have a mantra I use to remember this and it is a nice reminder I share with clients when I am supporting them to start valuing themselves. Today, I wanted to discus value a bit more.
What Does Value Mean?
There are many definitions and ways to look at value and valuing yourself. Some of them include –
- “.to rate or scale in usefulness, importance, or general worth,” and “to estimate or assign the monetary worth of” ~ Merriam-Webster
- “.the importance or worth of something for someone” ~ Cambridge Dictionaries Online
- “.relative worth, merit, or importance” and “estimated or assigned worth; valuation” ~ Dictionary.com
- “Self-value is more behavioural than emotional, more about how you act toward what you value, including yourself, than how you feel about yourself compared to others” ~ Steven Stosny
Where Do We Discover Value?
We can discover value in many places. For many reasons, I have investigated values and discovered we can anchor our value essentially in three places – internally and externally and of course both. For example, we could value –
- Appearance: My value is dependent upon appearance or I value appearance,
- Competition: My value links to how well I do in relation to other people or I value how well I do in relation to others, .
- Education / Academia: My value is influenced on how I do in my educational achievements or I value how well I do in my educational achievements,
- Family Support: My value is contingent upon what my family desire for me or I value my family support,
- God’s Love: My value is influenced by what God thinks of me or I value what God thinks of me,
- Other People’s Approval: My value is dependent upon what other people think of me or I value what other people think of me,
- Virtue: My value is dependent upon my own virtues and living by those or I value living by my virtues,
As you can see the above aspects of value can be both internal and external. It depends upon where we focus our attention and obviously value can be linked across more than one. I also think there can be more areas we can link value – for example the amount of money we have.
