7 Reasons To Focus on Your Relationship With Money

JT - Empty pockets never held anyone back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that

During the many years I spent researching and learning about well-being, one area I found was continually being overlooked was money. From speaking and coaching with many people, I knew it was a challenge for them, however it wasn’t until I experienced my own hurdles and challenges with money that I started to investigate the stories I was telling myself as well as the meaning I had created around money with greater diligence.

Looking back, I am so grateful for the wake-up call I had as I really didn’t know where I was financially. I didn’t know how much money I needed to cover my essential needs or expenses, what filled or drained my energy (and what that had to do with money), where my money was coming from and going to, the people who I trusted to help me or how I could start to focus on my finances. I also didn’t really trust myself or if I could really start to master my relationship with money. In my professional life, I was working long hours, which impacted my personal life and was not seeing my friends and family much and my health was being effected.

Subsequently, I knew it was time to change, get clarity and realise money mattered. Following are 7 reasons why I am glad I started to focus on my relationship with money.

7 Reasons to Focus on Your Relationship With Money

1. We Cannot Change What We Refuse to Confront –

Yes I know it takes courage to change. Some days I wished it was easier, however I realised that my experience was another lesson I needed to learn so I kept on showing up. I chose to pay attention to my relationship with money and gently lean in to the uncomfortableness. Yes, it was painful and challenging, however I got through it and if I didn’t have this experience I wouldn’t trust myself as I do today.

2. Clarity –

If I didn’t choose to look at my relationship with money (i.e. the beliefs, values, stories etc.), I wouldn’t have the clarity around money that I have today. I now know where I am financially, have time to do the projects that I was putting off, have been relationships with my family and friends, am more compassionate and confident in my own abilities.

3. It’s Not All About the Money –

In the past I thought it was about making more money and then I would experience wellbeing. What I’ve realised now is that financial freedom is not about having more money – it is more about aligning and organising our life so we spend money on what we value.

“If being rich made people happy, wouldn’t all rich people be happy?” ~ Author Unknown.

4. Increased Self-Worth –

My lack of financial well-being was linked to my own lack of self-value/worthiness and my perception of failing. I realised the more I started to pay attention to my relationship with money, the relationship I had with myself changed. I became more present and loving in my own life.

“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all-in which case, you fail by default.” ~ J. K. Rowling.

5. The Best Time Is NOW –

Yes the best time to start my journey, to forgive myself and to pay attention to my relationship with money is NOW, not tomorrow or when I am in a relationship – I am already complete and whole (I just had to unlearn some beliefs and behaviours). And the only time to do that is NOW –

“With the past, I have nothing to do; nor with the future. I live now.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson.

6. There is Enough for Everyone –

Before I started to investigate my relationship with money, I didn’t think there was enough. Subconsciously, I was running on old programming and seeing money as a competition, just like the game of tennis. What I’ve realised is there is enough money for everyone – just like oxygen there is enough money to go around and allowing ourselves to be all that we are, helps other people step up and shine their own light.

“Your own Self-Realization is the greatest service you can render the world.” ~ Ramana Maharshi.

7. DENIAL Wasn’t Working –

Occasionally, I used to think DENIAL might work, however it didn’t. I had to be honest with myself and not live in DENIAL (Don’t Even Notice I Am Lying) any longer. I realised

“The truth will set you free.” ~ Unknown.
