Courage and the Serenity Prayer
A few years ago I came across the Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr.
It was a time in my life when I was going through a lot of personal growth and struggling to come to terms with situations and experiences that had happened in the past.
The Serenity Prayer helped me start to question these situations and experiences. And by questioning them, I started to realise there were things in my life I could change and there were things I could not.
By knowing the difference between what I could change and what I could not as well as what I have control over and what I don’t, I started to embrace my courage so I could lean in to my fear and take action towards the life I dreamed of.
The Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
As it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
If I surrender to His Will;
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life
And supremely happy with Him
Forever and ever in the next.
Amen.
