What’s the Best that Could Happen?

JT - You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. – Wayne Gretzky

Let’s face it, we are living in an uncertain world and making changes can be challenging. Today I wanted to share with you more about risk as it is something that I have been thinking about a bit recently.

What is Risk?

There are many definitions of risk and some include –

  • “the possibility of something bad happening” ~ Cambridge Dictionary
  • “exposure to the chance of injury or loss; a hazard or dangerous chance” ~ Dictionary.com
  • “a person or thing that is likely to cause problems or danger at some time in the future” ~ Oxford Dictionary
  • “a situation involving exposure to danger, change, or uncertainty” ~ Unknown

Most definitions focus on what might go wrong. But risk is also about possibility. It’s about stepping into something new without knowing exactly how it will turn out.

When we think about risk in life, it can help to look at how risk and growth connect.

5 Other Ways to Think About Risk –

In life, some of the most meaningful moments come from doing something different – changing direction, speaking up, starting something new, or backing yourself when it would be easier not to. Five other ways to think about risk:

  • Risk as uncertainty – stepping into the unknown without guaranteed outcomes.
  • Risk as possibility – the chance that something different, new, or better could happen.
  • Risk as exposure – putting yourself out there, where failure and success are both real.
  • Risk as choice – a decision to act despite not having all the answers.
  • Risk as growth – the discomfort that often comes just before progress.

In life, the biggest changes rarely come from playing it safe. They come from trying something different, starting before you feel ready, speaking up, changing direction, or backing yourself.

We spend so much time asking: What if it goes wrong?
What if we also asked: What’s the best that could happen?

Some of the best decisions I’ve made started as uncomfortable risks. Sometimes the greatest risk is staying exactly where you are.
