5 Areas of Life You Can to Start to Simplify Using Systems

JT - Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler

Yes, life can be challenging and overwhelming. However, systems can start to simplify your life and help you focus on the things you can control.

Therefore, in this post I wanted to share with you –

  • What is a System?
  • Life as a System, and
  • 5 Areas of Your Life to Start to Simplify Using Systems.

What is a System?

There are many definitions on systems, including –

  • “a set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network; a complex whole” ~ Google
  • “A system is a way of working, organising, or doing something which follows a fixed plan or set of rules” ~  Collins Dictionary
  • “a set of connected things or devices that operate together” ~ Cambridge Dictionary
  • “A system is a network of interdependent components that work together to try to accomplish the aim of the system. A system must have an aim. Without an aim, there is no system. …A system must be managed. The secret is cooperation between components toward the aim of the organization. We cannot afford the destructive effect of competition.” ~ W. Edwards Deming
  • “A system is a whole that consists of parts, each of which can affect its behaviour or its properties.” and “Systems behaviour is determined by the interaction of the parts, not the parts taken separately.” ~ Dr Russell Ackoff

Life as a System

Life is a system. It is made up of a number of parts (i.e. our physical, mind, emotions), areas of life (e.g. finances, relationships, work etc.) within a bigger system (i.e. community, media and other systems). Each system impacts on the other.

I learnt this lesson the hard way a few years ago, when I didn’t have enough money in the bank to pay my mortgage. This not only had an impact on my own wellbeing, it also impacted on the bank.

5 Areas of Life You Can to Start to Simplify Using Systems

There are many areas of life where you can start to simplify using systems. Today, I will share with you the following 5.

1. Systemising Your Money and Finances –

What are your essential tasks in relation to your money and finances? Have you noticed similar weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly and yearly tasks occurring? For example – expenses are due and need to be paid at a certain time. By identifying these tasks and action, you can simplify your life and gain back time. By having these tasks systemised it can help your tax preparation immensely.

2. Systemising Your Morning and Evening Routines –

By investing the time to systemise your morning and evening routine, you ensure that your start and finish the day the way you would like. For me, these routines involve self-reflection practises – including journaling, gratitude and my current intentions etc.

3. Systemising Your Household Chores –

Are you seeing a natural flow in the way you do household chores? For example – do you do the washing on a Sunday? Put the dishwasher on before you go to bed? By starting to set-up simple systems for the household chores, life flows more easily.

4. Systemising Your Work Tasks –

Whether you are an employee, business owner or entrepreneur, there will be tasks that are recurring in your work. Setting this up in a system, can help with efficiency and effectiveness, which then impacts on your overall results.

5. Systemising Your Paper Flow –

This is similar to the money and finances, however, a little different. No doubt, you still have letters or paper that you deal with? If so, how do you deal with the flow of that paper? For me, it is set-up in a system as I know I do not have time to open it the moment I pick it up from the post office.
