Small Steps Lead to Big Changes: The Power of 1%
The Power in Just One Percent
I wonder what your life would look like in 365 days from now, if you added one small conscious action (i.e. one percent) in each important area of your life? And we broke that action down to just one per-cent.
One per-cent with ‘cent’ being short for centum, meaning one-hundredth or 1% of a dollar (100 cents). Yes, adding and extra 1% of effort, skill or knowledge every day for the next 365 days, would equate to 365%. Wow, that could equate to you being 3 and a 1/2 times healthier, happier or wealthier in 365 days!
Areas of Life – Where to Focus 1%
Your small, conscious, consistent actions can be in any area of life. For example, some areas could include –
- Career / Business,
- Confidence / Emotional Awareness,
- Giving / Contribution / Community,
- Family / Friends,
- Health / Body / Movement,
- Intimate Relationship,
- Leisure / Fun,
- Money / Finances,
- Personal Growth,
- Self-Management,
- Living Space / Physical Environment, and
- Travel / Holidays.
As you begin to take small steps, the first day you change or improve by 0.01, then day 2 – 0.02, followed by 0.03. Yes this may appear small, however it is something and this is how change start and these small steps lead to big changes. Now let’s break this down even further…
Some Examples of 1%
What would a small, conscious, consistent action or bit of effort look like for you? How do I do this in y life? Firstly, I decide on a priority within an area of life, make sure the action is in my control and then start taking action. Following are a few examples of actions –
- Money / Finances – start tracking your expenses or save $1 per day,
- Giving – give one thing or item per day (i.e. a meaningful text or one genuine compliment),
- Health – drink an extra glass or water or identify a way to move your body (that works for you and your body),
- Personal Growth – journalling a page a day with a specific prompt to develop your self-awareness.
Once you decide what you want to increase by 1%, you can decide how to track and measure the 1% actions, to watch your progress.
