Change Your Thoughts to Change Your Story
If you have been reading my journal for a while, you will know I am committed to living above the line in my life (and don’t worry I am far from perfect and have had many learning experiences), being more self-compassionate and focusing on what I can control.
At the start of 2015, I wrote 100 Things to Do in 2015 and as part of commitment I promised to be my own best friend by the end of 2015.
I have completed many of the things I set out to do in 2015, however today I wanted to share with you how I am learning more and more how each and every component of my experience is being drawn to me in relation to the story I am telling myself – from moment to moment.
What Do I Mean By “The Story I Am Telling Myself”?
What I mean is each moment I could be telling myself a story in relation to any number of aspects of my career, business or life, including –
- my body and what shape it is in,
- money and financial assets,
- the career and the work I do,
- relationships (friends, family etc.) and how they are going,
- the environment I live in and what is happening around me, or
- basically anything in my life experience.
Subsequently, the stories (made up of thoughts, feelings and body sensations) that I tell myself (whether conscious or unconscious), then have an impact on how I am feeling and my current life experience, happiness and well-being.
Change Your Thoughts to Change Your Story
Dr Wayne Dyer said it so well “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
If we don’t like the current story of our life, we can change our thoughts and by changing our thoughts we can change our story and life. As we start to change our life, we receive feedback through our senses and feelings to know if we are on track and allowing life to be as it is.
When we start noticing our thoughts, we realise some thoughts feel better than others. Then we start to see that thoughts are just thoughts and they are not who we really are.
As Rollo May writes in the Courage to Create –
“Human freedom involves our capacity to pause between the stimulus and response and, in that pause, to choose the one response toward which we wish to throw our weight. The capacity to create ourselves, based upon this freedom, is inseparable from consciousness or self-awareness.”
Untangling the Resistance…
If we want to change our story and our life from what we are currently experiencing, we can start untangling the story we tell ourselves or the resistance to the present moment. As we start untangling the resistance to the present moment and being aware of your language, thoughts, feelings and actions, life starts to flow.
As we do this it is important to remember –
- it is our responsibility to do the work (no-one else can do it for us),
- to focus on the learnings or gifts we receive and the gratitude that surrounds us, and
- we have the power to give yourself permission to create the vision for our life we would like.
Over to You…
Are you telling yourself any stories? If so, who would you be without your story? Are you committed to telling a different story?
Are you willing to invest the time in unravelling the barriers that are holding you back from being who you truly are and surrender to this moment?
